  • Region: Puglia
  • Country: Italy
  • Year: Non-Vintage
  • Price: $10.95
  • Shop review:
    • "COLOR straw yellow with golden reflections and a delicate mousse.  BOUQUET fruity and very inviting, with intense scents of peaches and exotic fruit.  FLAVOR fresh and pleasantly sweet with a taste that reveals its varietal characteristic."
  • My review:
    • This wine was delicious!  It was bubbly and sweet, and the fact that it was served chilled made it very refreshing.  I tasted peach, honey, and flowers.  These delicate flavors made this moscato taste very light.

Tasting- "Finca del Castillo Tempranillo 2011"

Finca del Castillo Tempranillo 2011

  • Variety: 100% Tempranillo
  • Region: La Mancha
  • Country: Spain
  • Year: 2011
  • Price: $4.95
  • Shop review:
    • "Rooty, spicy and baked on the nose, with aromas that lean towards raisin.  The palate is more gritty and acidic, with raisin, cola, and spicy flavors.  Darkens up on the finish, which is long and peppery, with adequate juiciness and a final note of tomato."
  • My review:
    • This wine was very strong; the smell was almost overpowering.  It is a full-bodied wine with very bold flavors such as raisin and pepper.
  • I did not have this wine with food.

Tasting- "Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais Nouveau 2012"

Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais Nouveau 2012

  • Variety: 100% Gamay
  • Region: Burgundy
  • Country: France
  • Year: 2012

  • Shop review:
    • "Bright and tangy, offering a classic banana note on the nose, with flavors of raspberry, wild strawberry and light spice.  Modest finish."
  • My review:
    • This wine smelled like raspberry jam to me, but the flavor I found when I tasted it was more like strawberry banana.  It was very fruity, almost to the point of tasting like juice.  I can see how it would be very appealing to someone who was just beginning to get into red wine, as I am.
  • I did not have this wine with food.

Tasting- "Mars and Venus Chardonnay 2011"

Mars and Venus Chardonnay 2011

  • Variety: 100% Chardonnay
  • Region: Castilla
  • Country: Spain
  • Year: 2011
  • Price: $5.95
  • Shop review:
    • "A very nice value Chardonnay that comfortably over-delivers vs. its modest price tag.  No oak here, just bushels of clean, crisp, Chardonnay apple and stone fruit with a hint of caramelized pineapple.  Juicy and clean, this is a mid-weight white that's just perfect for parties or weeknight sipping.
  • My review:
    • This white wine was very sweet and refreshing; it tasted very summer-y to me.  I definitely tasted the pineapple, but also apple.  I thought the apple flavor made it very crisp.
  • I did not have this wine with food.

Tasting- "La Cappuccina Soave 2011"

La Cappuccina Soave 2011

  • Variety: 100% Garganega
  • Country: Italy

  • My review:
    • This wine was very light but also slightly acidic.  I mostly tasted hints of peach and apple, and it smelled very fruity.
  • I did not try this wine with food.

Tasting- "Opera Prima Sweet Red 2010"

Opera Prima Sweet Red 2010

  • Variety: Tempranillo (50%), Cabernet Sauvignon (50%)
  • Region: Castilla la Mancha
  • Country: Spain
  • Year: 2010
  • Price: $4.95
  • Shop review:
    • "Doesn't try to hide its warm-climate terroir, with a soft texture framing jammy-sweet black raspberry, cherry, red currant, root beer and sweet tea. Drink now."
  • My review:
    • I didn't realize that red wines could be so sweet! This would be a great wine to drink with chocolate or a rich dessert. I think it tasted like sweet berries or jam and it was surprisingly light for a red wine.

Tasting- "Montes Alpha Syrah 2009"

Montes Alpha Syrah 2009

  • Variety: Syrah (90%), Cabernet Sauvignon (7%), Viognier (3%)
  • Region: Apalta
  • Country: Chile
  • Year: 2009
  • Price: $7.95
  • Shop review:
    • "Blackberry and cola aromas are cool and collected. The palate has weight and texture to accompany berry, mint, herb and peppery flavors. Turns more herbal as it unwinds. Pepper and spice lead the finish."
  • My review:
    • I got a heavy woodsy or oak-y flavor from this wine. It was definitely spicy and peppery, more so than the Coreto Tinto. To me, the pepper flavor was a little off-putting because it was so strong.

Tasting- "Coreto Tinto 2010"

Coreto Tinto 2010

  • Variety: Tinta Roriz (25%), Caladoc (20%), Touriga Nacional (15%), Shiraz (10%), Alicante Bouschet (10%)
  • Region: Lisboa
  • Country: Portugal
  • Year: 2010
  • Price: $6.95
  • Shop review:
    • "Despite its light touch, this is fruity and full, with its blackberry fruit dominating the warm spice note and the acidity. Soft tannins keep the wine together."
  • My review:
    • I could definitely taste the berry flavors in this wine. It struck me as very unique, because it is very different from other wines I have had due to the strong blackberry flavor. It also has a spicy aftertaste, which made it very warming. I think it would be a good wine to drink with meat during dinner.

Tasting- "Maipe Sauvignon Blanc 2011"

Maipe Sauvignon Blanc 2011

  • Variety: 100% Sauvignon Blanc
  • Region: Cuyo
  • Country: Argentina
  • Year: 2011
  • Price: $7.95
  • Shop review:
    • "Yellow color with green hints.  Expressive wine, fresh, very aromatic.  This Sauvignon Blanc displays grapefruit flavors, with hints of melon and honey.  It finishes with bracing acidity and fresh mouth feels that make it a terrific aperitif and an excellent accompaniment to virtually all seafood, especially shellfish."
  • My review:
    • This wine tasted very dry to me. It tasted a little flowery, but to be honest it tasted just like other white wines I have had; I couldn't pick out many distinguishing features. There were definitely hints of fruit in addition to the floral taste, but otherwise it just tasted like a dry white wine.

Tasting- "Encostas do Limo Vinho Verde 2010"

Encostas do Limo Vinho Verde 2010

  • Variety: 80% Loureiro, 20% Trajadura
  • Region: Colheita
  • Country: Portugal
  • Year: 2010
  • Price: $4.95
  • Shop review:
    • "Pale golden silver color.  Bright floral aromas of peaches, raspberry, and honeysuckle with a soft, dry-yet-fruity medium body and a crisp, tart citrus and talc accented finish.  A delightful sipper that is sure to please."
  • My review:
    • This wine was very sweet and fruity.  I tasted peach the most, but I also tasted hints of apple.  To me, it was very refreshing and I think it would  be a great wine to drink in the summer to cool down.

My Personal Experience with Wine

Hello!  My name is Julia Hosick and this is my brand new wine blog!  I'm a senior at Virginia Tech double majoring in French and International Studies.  As a French major, one would assume that I'm "into wine" and have a lot of experience with it, but that's not exactly the case.  Having traveled a lot I've been exposed to many types of wine but I haven't really learned how to drink it and appreciate it, and I haven't exactly taken advantage of all the exotic wine drinking opportunities that have been presented to me over the years.  My most significant wine experience thus far has been visiting a winery, Domaine de l'Aumonière, in Cour-Cheverny, France this summer.  The group I was with toured the winery, saw how the wine was made, and participated in a wine tasting.  Besides this, I have only occasionally had wine with meals, and this isn't even a frequent occurance.  In other words, I would describe myself as a wine novice.

Domaine de l'Aumonière wine tasting

Inside the winery

Based on the wines that I've had, I tend to prefer white wines, probably just because they aren't as strong and are (at least in my experience) generally sweeter.  Though I can't think of the names of any specific wines off the top of my head, I do like Moscato.  I'm not sure if this counts as a wine exactly, but my favorite drink is a kir royale, a combination of champagne and crème de cassis.  Another (cheaper!) variation is a kir, in which white wine replaces the champagne.  Drinking lots of those while traveling this past summer helped open me up to drinking white wine and getting used to the flavor a little more.  Since then, I've started to drink wine more than I used to, although I still have a tendency to stick with white wines.

In this course, I hope to learn more about different types of wine and how to appreciate them.  I think it will be interesting to learn what types of wines come from different parts of the world, and how things like geography and climate influence the taste of the wines.  I also hope to learn a lot of practical knowledge about drinking wine, for example what foods to pair with certain wines, how to identify good wines, how to properly "taste" a wine, etc.  I'm also looking forward to expanding my palate and trying many different wines that I would otherwise not have as much exposure to.
